Beshear Campaign: Bevin Using "Violent Language" in Video Against TV Ad

The newest fight between Matt Bevin and Andy Beshear revolves around a Facebook video released by the governor.

Bevin released a video slamming Andy Beshear’s first television ad, but the response from the Beshear campaign isn’t focused on what the video is about.

The two minute video posted Wednesday challenges the 30-second ad spot where Beshear speaks about his faith.

The six-figure ad buy speaks about his grandparent’s time as preachers.

“My granddad and great granddad were Baptist preachers from Western Kentucky. Their faith guided them — just as it guides my work today,” the commercial begins.

In Bevin’s video he accuses Beshear of hiding his pro-choice stance behind his grandfather’s past.

“I’m willing to bet that they would not have taken money from abortion providers like Andy Beshear does,” Bevin says. “I think it’s insulting to the Baptist tradition, I think it’s insulting to people of Baptist faith to try and couch what his grandfather and great-grandfather did as sort of covering for his pro-abortion stance.”

But that is not what the Beshear campaign is taking issue with, they are accusing Bevin of using violent language for saying “hold your powder dry.”

“There is no middle ground here. This is not a time to hold your powder dry or wait and see what someone else is doing,” Bevin says in the video referencing acting on pro-life policies.

“Matt Bevin continues to use the type of violent language that can get people hurt, and he is now specifically requesting for people not to ‘hold your powder dry.’ “Campaign Manager Eric Hyers said in a statement. “To make these unhinged comments after the tragic events of the last several days is unacceptable and sadly another example why Bevin is unfit to govern. For Bevin to attack Andy Beshear’s faith and his late grandfather’s and great grandfather’s service as Baptist preachers in western Kentucky is disgraceful.”

The Bevin campaign says the outrage from the Beshear campaign is only for political advantage—and they are using the recent mass shootings for their political gain.

“Andy Beshear should stop with the manipulative fake outrage over what is a common expression,” Bevin Campaign Manager Davis Paine said in response. “Kentucky deserves a real discussion over these serious issues and deserves better than Beshear using national tragedies to advance his personal political prospects.”

Dictionary.com says the phrase “keep your powder dry”  originally alluded to keeping gunpowder dry so it would be able ignite, since the 1800’s it’s only used figuratively and is similar to saying “take care”.

In his video, Bevin calls on Baptist Pastors from across Kentucky to “weigh in and tell us where you stand” on the issue of life.

Andy Beshear’s Pastor at Beargrass Christian Church did weigh in releasing a statement in support of Beshear.

“Andy and his family are active members of our church, where Andy serves as a deacon,” Dr. Leigh Bond, Senior Pastor says in a statement. “He is a person of strong faith and it is clear that he and Britainy are passing those values along to their children.”

A coalition of Baptist Pastors from across Kentucky also responded–condemning Beshear for using his grandfather and great grandfather to “paint you as a conservative”.

In a letter addressed to Beshear a group of 25 pastors say they are “embarassed and appalled” he “misrepresented” the Baptist Heritage in his campaign ad.

“Baptist Faith would never guide anyone to accept money that was made by taking the lives of unborn children,” the letter reads. “To use “Baptist Faith” to give a pass to abortionists is the zenith of hypocrisy!
