A bill championed by state Rep. Steve Riley, R-Glasgow, which will recognize student-enlistees in the military as career-ready based on the passage of an aptitude test cleared the House on Tuesday.
House Bill 231 calls for student-enlistees who receive a qualifying score for their military branch in the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, or ASVAB, to be acknowledged as career-ready according to state board of education standards.
The bill moves on to the Senate after it was unanimously passed in the House.
“Young men and women who are dedicating their lives to serving our country deserve to be properly recognized by the Board of Education,” Riley stated in a news release. “This legislation will ensure these students are appropriately identified as career-ready, while making sure our schools receive the proper credit for preparing our students.”
According to the news release, students who take the ASVAB and enlist are only eligible to obtain career-ready status if they receive a score of 50 or higher, though most military brances only require a score in the 30s.
