HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – Forest fires broke out across Eastern Kentucky Sunday afternoon.

Small fire in Perry County

Officials with the Division of Forestry tell WYMT they responded to 18 fires on Sunday, nine of which are now contained.

We are told the largest fire was reported in Perry County near the Vicco community. It is 45 acres in size.

Fires were also reported in Bell County, Harlan County, Clay County, Knott County, Laurel County, Pike County, and Floyd County.

Officials say they do not know what started the fires at this time.

Fire season began Feb. 15 and will continue through April 30. During this time, it is illegal to set a fire within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland area between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
