by Nick Storm – An issues based non-profit group which played a major role in the 2014 U.S. Senate race is revamping their efforts with a new ad campaign focusing on public policy issues in Frankfort.

The Kentucky Opportunity Coalition, a 501(c )4 non-profit organization dropped their first ad of a six week campaign spotlighting spending, pensions and tort reform.

The first ad of the six week campaign says the state is facing “major financial problems, but longtime Frankfort politicians and insiders refuse to change their big spending ways.”

The longtime politician the group is pointing the finger at, in the video is House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg.

The spot highlights newly elected Gov. Matt Bevin and Republican leadership in the House and Senate who are “working to get Kentucky’s finances back on track.”

“They have a plan to cut wasteful spending, fix our broken pension system and finally pass tort reform,” a narrator in the ad says.

The ad is running statewide on cable, and the group intends to spend six-figures on the ad campaign in as many weeks.

“The coalition was pleased with its public education efforts in previous years and has decided to carry that forward as Frankfort policymakers figure out what to do about the massive budget shortfall, our unfunded pension liabilities, and the state’s legal climate,” said Scott Jennings, Senior Advisor to the Kentucky Opportunity Coalition, in a news release.

“There are two groups of people in Frankfort right now – those that want to explode our debt and cling to anti-job policies, and the conservatives who want to cut wasteful spending, fix our pensions, and improve our job climate,” Jennings continued.

The ad campaign’s six week timeline coincides with the March 8 special elections, when the GOP has their best shot in nearly a century to tie up or take the majority of the state House of Representatives. Currently Democrats control the lower chamber with 50 members to Republicans 46 members.
