The Fayette County Health Department is changing the timing of flu shot availability due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A drive-thru free flu shot event will be held October third from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 at Consolidated Baptist Church on Russell Cave Road.  It will only be for high-risk people, 13 years of age and older.  Starting October fifth, free flu shots will be available at the health department’s clinic on Newtown Pike.  Fayette Health Commissioner Kraig Humbaugh said appointments need to be made for either event. “The idea is not to have people congregate or be close together because of what’s happening with COVID.  So, both of these are going to be pre-scheduled only,” said Humbaugh.

Humbaugh noted the cost to the health department for the influenza vaccine will be about $35 thousand along with additional labor expenses.  Last flu season, Lexington had three deaths from flu-related causes and 742 lab-confirmed cases.
