Jessica Short / Flooding in Letcher County Kentucky
Twelve Eastern Kentucky counties are now eligible for individual assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Leslie, Magoffin, Martin, and Whitley Counties were all added to the list on Friday. One area of concern is getting to people who are stranded because of damaged bridges on private property.
Governor Beshear said that because they’re dealing with private bridges on private property, it is making things complicated.
“We’re trying to be creative. We’re looking at every option. We’ve convened all the non-profits that help out and the Kentucky Housing Corporation and talking to other programs that are out there. This is going to be one of the major challenges.”
Governor Beshear said it is a problem that isn’t easy to solve, and he has been speaking with legislative leaders.
“As we look at rebuilding it’s one there is not a set answer for just yet. We’ve been talking to legislators about it too, trying to work the problem and it is one we will have to give updates as we work through.”
Residents dealing with bridges damaged by flooding on private property are encouraged to reach out to both FEMA and the Small Business Administration for help.
