A number of constitutional amendment measures have been acted on during this general assembly session. One acted on in the State Senate Tuesday pertains to Virginia and Kentucky.
Often times, legislation in Frankfort calling for a voter referendum also seeks to add language to Kentucky’s Constitution. Senate Bill 106 proposes to remove language from the state constitution. Wilder Senator Will Schroder said the bill seeks to reaffirm Kentucky statehood in June of 1792. “It was in there from the beginning when our state broke apart from Virginia. And at that time they needed to reference Virginia law. We no longer need to do that, we have our own laws on the books. So it’s simply un-necessary,” said Schroder.
Schroder said five separate bills calling for constitutional amendments have emerged from the Senate this session. Senate President Robert Stivers noted decisions about which amendments go on the ballot will be made at the end of the session.
