LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky’s attorney general is teaming up with police to stop human traffickers ahead of Kentucky Derby 144.
Attorney General Andy Beshear said it’s true that human traffickers descend on large sporting events, but he added that human trafficking also happens in our communities every day of the year.
He said some signs of human trafficking include people who:
- Travel together and have identical tattoos or branding.
- Are unable to identify what town or state they are in, or where they are staying.
- Lack official identification documents and personal possessions.
- Appear malnourished and have physical injuries.
- Avoid eye contact and seem to limit themselves to scripted or rehearsed responses when addressed socially.
- Are unable to properly sense the passage of time.
- Have possession of multiple pre-paid credit cards.
“I’m calling on all Louisvillians, all Kentuckians, all responsible adults who will be here for the Kentucky Derby, to take a stand against human trafficking,” Beshear said Monday afternoon. “This is our town. This is our featured event. And we cannot let criminals take it away from us.”
Officials say if you suspect a human trafficking victim is in immediate danger, dial 911. Anyone who suspects the human trafficking of a child should call 877-KYSAFE1.
Victims of human trafficking may also call or text the National Human Trafficking Hotline at (888) 373-7888.
