Sister station WKYT reports Kentucky is now in what is called a regional outbreak of the flu.

It is too early to know how effective this year’s flu shot is, but nurses say it is not too early to get it.

With Christmas just weeks away, medical professionals are expecting to see the number of flu cases rise as families and friends start spending more time together.

The peak of flu season is in February.

“If you get the flu shot you could be experiencing less symptoms even if it doesn’t cover that particular strain,” said Kimberly Harris, a nurse at the health department.

So far this year there are 785 confirmed cases of the flu in Kentucky.
