Sen. Gerald Neal, D-Louisville, tested positive for COVID-19 and was in the hospital Monday night.

His prognosis is good and Neal went to the hospital Monday as a precautionary measure, according to Senate Minority Leader Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville.

“Gerald Neal has fought for his community and civil rights for over 30 years in the state Senate and this is not going to slow him down, particularly at a time like this,” McGarvey told The Courier Journal late Monday evening.

Neal, who represents District 33, was first elected to the senate in 1989, and he is a practicing attorney with Gerald A. Neal & Associates, LLC. The senator also serves as Assistant Region Six Director for the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. He is former Chair of the Juvenile Justice Committee of the Kentucky Criminal Justice Council, and served on the Strategic Committee on Post-Secondary Education, according to Kentucky Senate Democrats.

Neal is the second member of the Kentucky legislature in the past week to come down with the virus. Kentucky State Rep. Attica Scott, D-Louisville, announced on Sunday she has tested positive for the coronavirus, and that she would be quarantining for 14 days.

Gov. Andy Beshear announced 291 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday, which brought the state total to 53,064 cases since the pandemic first came to Kentucky in March.
