LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For Republican Misty Glin, Sullivan University is where it all started.

It’s where she earned several degrees and worked for a few years as an instructor in the pharmacy technician program.

What You Need To Know

  • Republican Misty Glin is running for the Kentucky State Senate
  • Democrat Morgan McGarvey previously represented District 19
  • Cassie Chambers Armstrong is the Democratic candidate in the race
  • The special election is set for Feb. 21

“Without Sullivan, without the degrees and the relationships that I made here at Sullivan University, I don’t think I would ever have the confidence to do any of this,” she said during a recent interview on campus.

Glin is now running for the seat previously held by Democrat Morgan McGarvey in the Kentucky State Senate, representing District 19.

In November, Glin lost her race for the Jefferson County Public Schools Board.

“I wanted to make schools safer,” said Glin. “I wanted to focus on literacy and I wanted to just give parents back their voice. I felt like we are really lacking in parental voice in our school systems.”

Raised in the Portland neighborhood, Glin said she was the first in her family to go to college.

The mother of two children, she now works as a corporate training manager for a specialty pharmacy.

In 2020, Glin pushed for the passage of Alex’s Law, a bill related to bullying named for her son.

She and Alex testified before lawmakers.

“My son Alex was a student at JCPS and he was bullied almost to the end of his life in the second grade,” Glin told Spectrum News 1. “My 7-year-old son told me he didn’t want to live anymore, and he wanted to kill himself because of the abuse that he faced at JCPS.”

The measure passed the House unanimously, but never made it out of the Senate.

If elected, Glin would try to get the bill passed and focus on education, crime and economic development, she said.

“If we can get the crime down, and we can have great employees that are graduating from JCPS, there is no reason why small businesses wouldn’t want to come back to Kentucky, back to Louisville and do their businesses here,” said Glin.

The special election is set for Feb. 21.

The Democratic nominee in the race is Casssie Chambers Armstrong. You can read about her here.

Former State Senator Morgan McGarvey represented the district until he replaced retiring Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth in Washington.
