A Flash Flood Watch was issued for portions of southeastern Kentucky from Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon.

Harlan County Judge Executive Dan Mosley said the Catrons Creek, Cawood, Smith, Black Mountain, Jones Creek, and the Cranks area were hit the hardest.

County and state workers responded to the area removing debris from culverts.

Crews closed Highway 987 at Smith for some time because of a mudslide. Mosley said the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands will investigate the mudslide as it appears it could have been caused by a failure to an old sludge pond. He said it affected one family’s home.

“They ended up with some water underneath their home, but they were able to get out. There is no other damage to their house and nobody was injured as a result of it. They got out pretty quickly once the water came down the mountain,” said Mosley.

The forecast calls for another round of rain Sunday, which could lead to more flooding.
