Trey Grayson, the former Secretary of State and director of Harvard Institute of Politics expects plenty of punches to go along with the pork and mutton at Fancy Farm, but expects a lot of the major moments will happen off-stage.
Grayson, who spoke at Fancy Farm himself as Secretary of State and a candidate for the U.S. Senate, says Democrats may find extra energy this year as part of the minority. Democrats used to find the strength of their party in Western Kentucky, and there are still plenty of registered Democrats, but now the area leans heavily to the right — and for the left they’ll have to keep reaching out to those people and win back their support.
Something else to watch for at the picnic is who is not showing up. There are a core group of Democrats including Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, House Minority Leader Rocky Adkins and former Auditor Adam Edelen who have all talked about potentially running; if one of those politicians does not show, that could provide an insight, Grayson said. Attorney General Andy Beshear is the lone candidate to declare his candidacy for the governor’s mansion in 2019.
