UofL to award Brandeis Medal to Justice Elena Kagan

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – The University of Louisville says it will award the 2016 Brandeis Medal to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan.

U of L says in a statement that the Brandeis School of Law will give the medal to Kagan on Sept. 15 at the Seelbach Hilton Hotel in Louisville and she is expected to give a speech.

The school is named for Louis D. Brandeis, a former U.S. Supreme Court justice from Louisville. The medal is awarded to people who champion the values of Brandeis through work in areas including individual liberty, concern for the disadvantaged and public service.

Kagan was appointed to the nation’s high court in 2010, becoming the fourth female justice. Law school Dean Susan Duncan says Kagan has worked for individual freedoms, equal opportunity and human rights.
