A Senate committee approved a bill Thursday morning that would give Kentucky’s governor the power to fill vacancies in Louisville, although significant changes were made overnight to make the proposal more palatable to the Metro Council.

Mayor Greg Fischer made a surprise trip to Frankfort to speak out against a measure.

Fischer has called the measure “absurd,” and his administration has described it as an attempt to “micromanage” the city.

 

Republican state Rep. Ken Fleming, a former council member who sponsored the House version of the bill, has said Fischer is overreacting to the proposal. He has also pointed out that many of those provisions were ideas council Democrats have supported in the past.
